A Look Ahead: Macgruber

Oh boy here we go, we have another Saturday Night Live skit being turned into a movie. This has had some good and tragic consequences in the past for SNL. For example:

All You Need Is Cash
The Blues Brothers
Wayne's World
Wayne's World 2
Coneheads
It's Pat
Stuart Saves His Family
A Night at the Roxbury
Blues Brothers 2000
Superstar
The Ladies Man

Only a couple were big, there are a lot more flops in that list than hits. But I am actually optimistic about Macgruber.

The red band trailer for Macgruber i found quite hilarious and early reviews seem positive (100% on Rotten Tomatoes after 6 reviews). I think a lot of people are going to be surprised by what Macgruber has to offer to audiences. There hasn't been a good SNL movie in a long time, but I think this will be a successful comedy as well. The cast is stellar including Will Forte, Kirsten Wiig and Ryan Phillipe. It looks like a great, over the top, action comedy that won't take itself too seriously.

Macgruber hits theaters May 21st, 2010.

A Look Ahead: I Love You Phillip Morris

This is one of those projects that is just not getting the luck it needs right now. First off this is a dark dramedy about a con-man who turns gay and falls for another man. With the impressive physicality of Jim Carrey, good advanced reviews and a decent trailer, this movie was set to go. So what went wrong?

Well first it got push back to summer in July, which still isn't a bad thing. But then apparently the audience appeal went down for god knows what reason. This could be a possibility with the over emphasis of the gay-persona in this movie. Personally i don't mind it. All of the movies that have been about being gay or involving gay characters have been very subtle such as Oscar winning Brokeback Mountain and Sean Penn in Milk.

It takes a lot of guts to just advertise this so openly. As Jim Carrey says in the trailer, "I'm gay! That's right. Gay gay gay gay gay!". Yes i understand that Bruno didn't exactly give the openly gay character movies any hope with its box office tank, but this isn't for shock value. This looks like an R-rated passionate romance that i really wouldn't mind checking out, hopefully you will as well.

The movie got shelved but not it has a new release date and thank god for that. This looks low budget so why doesnt the studio just ride on Jim Carrey and Ewan Mcgregor, i mean these are some very big stars here, whatever i will never understand Hollywood and its stupid conventions. I think you should find this movie, looks like one of those gems.

I Love You Phillip Morris opens in theaters July 30th

A Look Ahead: Black Swan

Odds are you haven't heard a thing about this movie. That is understandable but I'm here to get the word out.

This is Darren Aronofsky's next movie. Do i have your attention now. With Pi and Requiem for Dream he solidified himself as one of the most creative and innovative directors working today. He may not have the blockbuster status of some, but this guy can bring something new to the table everytime. In Black Swan the story is this:

A thriller that hones in on the relationship between a veteran ballet dancer and a rival

Scary eh? I know it sounds like a horrible story but the cast is big:

Natalie Portman
Mila Kunis
Winona Ryder
Vincent Cassel

Granted with Aronofsky he met mixed critical reception with The Fountain and he has wide critical acclaim for The Wrestler. He is getting into original stories, and when a director of this stature gets original look out. Personally i am really looking forward to seeing this, and i will not be surprised if it ends up being nominated for a bunch of awards at next year's Oscar's. They have just wrapped production and no official images or trailers have been released.

Black Swan does not have a release date yet, but it will be released in 2010.

A Look Ahead: Due Date

We have the great Robert Downey Jr. and the breakout star Zack Galifianakis on a road trip to try and get Downey's character to his wife's birth time across the country. This is also from Todd Phillips who directed Old School and The Hangover. So why aren't you f!@#ing excited!?!?!?

There was some recent footage screen at Showest where many movies premiere some footage to a select few people and from what I have read on the internet, people were rolling in the aisles laughing at the footage. There is just so many reasons why to see this film. Will it reach the box office success of The Hangover? It's a possibility yes, but its still going to make a tonne of money by the time this thing rolls around. There isn't a trailer out yet, but keep a sharp eye out for because once it hits the web, let the hype begin...

Due Date hits theaters November 4th, 2010

A Look Ahead: Inception

Christopher Nolan is at it again

Nolan has been one of my favourite directors in recent years because he approaches every project with something new and fresh. Memento is his masterpiece, The Dark Knight stunned audiences. Now he's at it again with the mind-bending thriller Inception. So exactly what is it about? I have absolutely no idea what it is about, but that's why it is so inviting.

First off look at the cast:

Oscar nominee Leonardo Dicaprio (numerous films)
Oscar nominee Ellen Page (Hard Candy, Juno)
Oscar winner Marion Cotillard (La Vie en Rose, Public Enemies)
Oscar nominee Ken Watanabe (The Last Samurai, Letters From Iwo Jima)
Golden Globe nominee Cillian Murphy (Batman Begins, Red Eye)
Golden Globe nominee Joseph Gordon-Levitt (500 Days of Summer, The Lookout)
Two-time Oscar winner Michael Caine (Batman Begins, The Dark Knight)

Next off here is the story:

A conventional sci-fi action thriller set within the architecture of the mind. THAT'S IT

Throw all of this in with the nice trailers at the bottom of this page and you've got a mystery you can't wait to see. Nolan also wrote this movie with his brother Jonathan who also helped him write The Dark Knight and Memento. My guess, this looks like The Matrix meets Memento, and I am aching to see it

A Look Ahead: Tron Legacy

Yes i know, this does not come out until next December, but will it be the next Avatar?

I don't think it will reach the heights that Avatar did, but it will benefit from using similar technology and coming out at around the same time. It looks like this is going to be another step forward for the 3D technology with how the trailers, images and viral marketing is working out. Personally i think the advertising is doing its job perfectly. It is emphasizing what it needs to and, quite frankly it looks stunning. You may scoff at the fact that this is being released by Disney, but this looks like its going to push that PG-13 (PG/14A up in Canada) rating to its boundaries, i think they are going to make it very stylized as well. This is also a follow-up to the original Tron movie from 1982, but don't worry, you won't have to see it to understand this one. Can you believe this is first time director Joseph Kosinski? Its a leap of faith, but it looks like this is going to be a really fun and high tech thrill ride.
